Gear worth a closer look

Family towables can look similar in a product grid while delivering very different riding positions. Capacity is only the first filter. Seating depth, side support, tow direction, inflated size, and included setup gear determine which model makes sense for your crew.

How this list was built: Outpost Gears sells the products linked below. We compared the manufacturers’ published specifications and current catalog information; we did not conduct an independent hands-on test. Prices and availability can change, so confirm the live product page before ordering.

1. Prowler starter kit: setup items bundled together

The Prowler package includes a two-person towable, a 12V pump, and a 2K tow rope. Its published inflated size is 60 by 56 by 20 inches. It is the clearest option here for a buyer starting without inflation or towing equipment, but you should still confirm the rope rating, boat requirements, and connector compatibility.

2. Big Buddy 2: flexible deck seating

The Big Buddy 2 lists a 340-pound maximum capacity, extra-long sidewalls, an EZ-Up nose, and positions for sitting, lying down, or kneeling. Its published inflated dimensions are 82 by 67 by 26.5 inches. Compare that footprint with the storage room available in your vehicle and boat.

3. Sci-Fi Cockpit: separated seating

The Sci-Fi uses two cockpit positions with an inflated divider. Published information also lists front and rear tow points, allowing cockpit or chariot-style riding. Its inflated dimensions are 72 by 65 by 20 inches.

4. Beach Bubba 2: high-back support

The Beach Bubba combines a high backrest and sidewalls with a soft surface. The manufacturer lists standing, kneeling, and lying positions and inflated dimensions of 64 by 60 by 32 inches.

5. Wild Wing 2: curved body and two tow directions

The Wild Wing 2 has a U-shaped body with a curved bottom, slotted deck seating, and front and rear towing. Its stated maximum capacity is 340 pounds, and its inflated dimensions are 68 by 66 inches.

6. Matrix: room for as many as four

The Matrix places two foam seats at the front and two at the rear. It lists a 680-pound maximum capacity, high backrest and sidewalls, EVA seat and knee pads, and inflated dimensions of 91 by 66 by 32 inches.

7. Mega Ducky: the largest group option here

The Mega Ducky lists capacity for as many as five riders or 850 pounds. It has front and rear tow points, a couch-style deck, a high backrest, side wings, and foam seating pads. Its size and capacity also demand more attention to boat suitability, storage, inflation time, and the manufacturer’s towing instructions.

How to narrow the list

  1. Count riders and total their weight. Stay within both the rider count and weight limit.
  2. Choose a riding posture. Cockpit and couch designs offer a different experience from flatter deck or chariot positions.
  3. Check the complete setup. Confirm the boat, tow point, rope, connector, pump, and tube are compatible.
  4. Measure storage. Inflated dimensions matter on the water; packed size matters in the vehicle and at home.
  5. Plan supervision and flotation. Follow the product instructions, boating rules, and PFD requirements for every rider.
